The Benefits of Weight Loss Surgery

Weight loss surgery, otherwise known as bariatric surgery, is an operation that is indicated for those who are morbidly obese. However, many have questioned the effectiveness of bariatric surgery for the treatment obesity. In fact, it has stirred a number of controversies in the medical community. Is it really effective and safe to use? Fortunately, medical experts have concluded that the benefits of weight loss surgery do outweigh its risks for those who are having severe medical issues due to their obesity.

Aside from addressing obesity issues, there are several other benefits of weight loss surgery according to the American Medical Association (AMA). The AMA cited the following points as to why bariatric surgery is beneficial:

§ When weight loss surgery is used to treat diabetic patients 90% of the same population has improved or resolved the condition. During the first three months of post-surgery, most patients are already able to reduce their dose of anti-diabetic medications. In addition, their Hemoglobin A1c and blood glucose return to normal or near normal levels.
§ In many cases of extreme obesity bariatric surgery decreases one’s risk for death by 89%.
§ One of the highly significant benefits of weight loss surgery is that it greatly reduces the negative effects of hypertension. In fact, 62% of patients with hypertension who have undergone the procedure are cured. Even better, 78.5% of the same group are able to achieve improved conditions soon after surgery. In the span of few months, the medications taken by these patients were found to be reduced to only one.

§ More than 70% of patients with hyperlipidemia (a condition wherein one’s blood cholesterol and triglyceride levels are elevated) have improved health statuses.
§ Weight loss surgery was also able to treat obstructive sleep apnea in 89% of patients.

Other benefits of weight loss surgery as according to the American Medical Association include:

§ Weight loss surgery improves one’s over-all wellbeing
§ Weight loss surgery reduces the pain and inflammation felt in arthritis. In addition, it also promotes one’s mobility.
§ Patients who have undergone weight loss surgery are able to function well in terms of participating in recreational and physical activities.
§ The benefits of weight loss surgery also extends to one’s social being since it allows a previously obese person to socialize as well as have improved economic opportunities.
§ Weight loss surgery also improves or resolves various obesity-related conditions such as: heart failure, infertility, asthma, lymph edema, skin rashes, skin infections and ankle swelling.

Bariatric surgery is performed using either of these procedures: Vertical (sleeve) Gastrectomy, Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass, Duodenal Switch, or Adjustable Gastric Banding. Although AMA has indicated a certain benefit for each procedure, almost all of the procedures generally provide the same benefits as stated above. Indeed, the benefits of weight loss surgery do not only end in resolving obesity, but can also extend to providing quality life for all previously obese patients.
