Most people who visit their doctor complaining of heart palpitations describe it as a terrifying sensation whereby their heart is racing so fast it feels like it might explode. These symptoms typically describe what is known as a Panic Attack and the patient is experiencing anxiety heart palpitations.
When you endure this horrible sensation for the first time it can feel overwhelmingly frightening. Heart palpitations due to anxiety cause the heart rate to elevate beyond the levels of normal until the heart is thumping hard inside the chest cavity. This sensation is typically the same as you might experience during strenuous exercise, but the difference with anxiety related heart palpitations is that the symptoms occur at specific psychological trigger points.
You might initially visit your doctor because you feel you have a physical problem, but the problem is usually a psychological one; although you should have some tests done just to make sure that there are no underlying issues to be aware of. When faced with the distressing problem of anxiety related heart palpitations, many people focus on the physical symptoms and lose sight of the underlying causes. They should instead be trying to deal with the situation that is provoking the heart palpitations.
The best way to deal with anxiety heart palpitations is to try and relax. It is all too easy to feel out of control when your heart is racing at an alarming rate. This is normal. What you are experiencing is your body’s fight or flight response. The flood of adrenaline released during this reaction is what causes your heart to race.
Anxiety attacks are often triggered by specific situations and when faced with the same situation, you immediately expect a recurrence of the symptoms. It soon becomes a self fulfilling prophecy whereby you wait for it to happen, therefore it does happen. By attempting to avoid panic provoking situations, the more it will control your life. It is far better to face the problem head on and deal with it.
Practicing relaxation skills can help anxiety heart palpitations enormously. Breathing techniques are a key part of relaxation during stressful situations and many people find this method really helps. Our breathing pattern changes when we experience a huge amount of stress. It goes from a deep, slow breathing pattern to a shallow, fast breathing pattern. This is often referred to as ‘hyperventilating’ and can cause all kinds of unpleasant side effects such as dizziness, nausea, and confusion. Thankfully it is easy to reverse the symptoms by simply making a conscious effort to breathe slowly and deeply. This does take practice, but with time you will be able to reverse your body’s natural fight or flight response to a stressful situation.
There are many psychological causes behind anxiety attacks. Stress and/or depression are often key factors underlying anxiety heart palpitations.
